An excellent and straight forward “5-4-3-2-1” exercise is an easy yet powerful technique for reconnecting your mind when anxiety looms to take control. It’s a simple yet very effective way of counting back from five.
It all started with using our five senses- sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste.
The first starting point is for those suffering in a moment of stress/anxiety to take a thorough look round at your surrounding. And identify five things that you see that very moment.
Once completed the five, identify four noises around you that you can hear – faint or loud.
Three things you can feel – anything from the tightness of your shoes to a piece of jewellery.
Next, you’ll need to identify two things that you can smell – could be the pollution from cars or someone’s perfume or aftershave.
And lastly, one thing you can taste. Which can even be a piece of food or a sip of your water, as long as you can taste it will work.
Using these simple and effective steps can be done quickly and can be accomplished anywhere.
