5 books to help beginners, understand Mindfulness in the modern world
1: The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
I guess you probably would have a guess which one I was starting with. Yep, The Power Of Now by Eckhart Tolle.
While Eckhart would most likely agree that within his book, we actually know all of it. However, most of us have never tapped to our mind to understand how it makes us feel, and live in the present moment. You’ll soon come to realise this when you read. He certainly has a way of revealing them in a different light.
The message Eckhart Tolle delivers is that of living “in the now”. “Present moment, so this very second you are reading this”. A notion many mindfulness practitioners already understand, but one that beginners struggle to figure it out. Tolle’s spirit and transparent, compassionate liked voice is what makes this book stand out from all other’s and change the lives of those millions who have read this masterpiece.
2: The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
The Four Agreements isn’t your ordinary book about Mindfulness. In actual fact, this is more of a guide to living life and staying mindfully present throughout each day.
Don cleverly introduces ancient Toltec wisdom into our modern world. The Four Agreements which are talked about are: be pure with your word, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions, and always do your very best in any situation.
His ideas offer a grand code of conduct that not even the like-minded can disagree with. I’m for sure that the reason Don crated this book in 40 different languages is to make it accessible for anyone to have the ability to read this fantastic book.
Note to self: Be prepared, this is a book you most definitely will be staying in your bag, It’s that good.
3: The Headspace Guide to Meditation and Mindfulness: How Mindfulness Can Change Your Life in Ten Minutes a Day by Andy Puddicombe

Headspace’s founder, Andy Puddicombe, committed in his twenties to study meditation and became a Tibetan Buddhist monk in Northern India. This journey of his life took him on an unforgettable experience teaching the practice.
Andy began his meditative and Mindfulness journey, much like the rest of us – a regular student at Uni (sport science).
A busy guy with everyday problems and stress building up, which he wanted to understand to improve his way of living. He does a spectacular job of introducing the topic of Mindfulness and techniques to bring meditation into your life, with stories from his own life. As well as helping people understand just how great 10 minutes per day can be to our wellbeing. This book will definitely help beginners learn Mindfulness. Give it a read and find out.
4: 10% Happier by Dan Harris
Is this just me, or does modern society do an excellent job of forcing us into frequent stress & worry in our lives? But when you think about that’s no one’s surprise. The biggest worry is that it has impacted our physical and mental wellbeing. In this inspiring book, you’ll discover Dan Harris’s life story and how he turned to meditation to pretty much save his life and live more of compassionate and fulfilling life.
If you want a book to enjoy reading, however like Dan, you are all new to meditation and Mindfulness and still can’t get to grips how using these techniques can really impact your everyday life. Dan does a fantastic job in explaining his story, as he does discover that discovers that meditation doesn’t have to alter your life significantly – sometimes, it just makes your current state much happier.
I found this book incredibly insightful, so anyone interested in meditation, but sceptical of the real-world benefits. This should be on your list to read/listen.
5: The Book of Joy. The Sunday Times Bestseller
So the reason I enjoyed this book was that it took me on experience to understand the true friendship, between the Dalai Lama & Desmond Tutu, one a Buddhist monk and the other Archbishop. It really taps into how one can access and obtain joy when there are so much sorrow and pain around us.
One quote which really hit me was Dalai Lama saying “I would rather go to hell, as there are more people that would need my help”. Hearing that really showed me the truth of enlightenment as one who is willing to serve and help in any given situation, genuinely extraordinary.
Do you ever find it hard to find happiness in a world full of sadness? In this book, you embark on a journey with Douglas Abrams. Who follows and captures the lives of two great spiritual leaders to learn and grasp the lessons on creating joy! So struggling to find joy within this work, I may have just found your next read.
